Putting viewers back in the cockpit of the planes that wrote history in the sky, this season of Warplane Workshop traverses the globe in pursuit of rare aircraft and the people who save them. From New Zealand to the USA, the landing grounds of Normandy to the killing fields of Arnhem.

Its stars include two iconic Spitfires and the First World War biplane that made the first landing on an aircraft carrier at sea.

We jump into action with American, French and Dutch parachutists recreating one of WW2’s most daring operations aboard a transport plane still scarred by bullet holes from the real raid.
And we meet some of the veterans who braved the lethal skies over the D Day beaches 80 years ago.

Featuring stunning air to air footage shot using gyro stabilised cameras mounted in the belly of our chase plane Warplane Workshop captures incredible machines in action, up high and up close..

In hangars and workshops across the world we meet passionate engineers using skills that have almost died out in the age of fly-by-wire airliners and stealth jets.
But it’s not just engineering – the series tells the human stories behind the machines in an industry fuelled by passion.

In one poignant episode we follow the restoration team determined to make their boss’s dream of an epic air show come true after receives a terminal cancer diagnosis.
We take off with a test pilot determined to restore his nerve after a crash that wrecked a priceless warbird…by flying it again after a major rebuild. And we meet a squadron of Scottish pensioners who spent 20 years crafting a wooden warplane by hand and found a way to ward off loneliness in their retirement.

Rebuilding broken wings and breathing life back into long-silent engines, these men and women are dedicated to making history fly.

We share the breakthroughs and setbacks on projects that can be 40 years in completion – and join the test pilots in the cockpit as they return vintage aircraft to the air.

Using newly discovered archive and testimony from the veterans who flew them, we tell the history of modern warfare through the planes that created it.
